With our “Little Music School in the Valley”, we aim to give access to music and instrument learning to kids of low-income neighborhoods with high rates of unemployment and crime.
Our project started on a very small scale 5 years ago and is now growing.
WHAT?

Based on the experience of a previous project developed in Cameroon from 2016 to 2018 by Xavier Duménil, the project founder, the objective is to initiate to music kids.

The school is open to children between 5 to 15 years old living in the Lorentzville, Bertrams, Bezuidenhout Valley areas, near Johannesburg city center.

We offer structured music and instrument lessons (trumpet, guitar, piano and saxophone) with professional teachers in a dedicated and equipped music studio of 78 sqm with 5 rooms.
HOW?

By structuring the project around a skilled and highly motivated team (teachers and school manager) and a carefully monitored budget, in order to guarantee the school’s success and perenniality.

Between 2019 and 2020, Xavier introduced around 30 kids to trumpet with lessons once a week.

In February 2021, two music teachers joined him then 2 more in May 2022 as well as 1 school supervisor.

From beginning of 2021, more than 200 kids have benefitted of our project attending to more than 5000 lessons and from January 2022 to September 2023, we have given more than 4000 lessons to 50 kids out of whom half of them are very regular students.

They have also performed 6 times during the "first sunday markets at Victoria Yards" since 2021 .

Victoria Yards, which is a unique regeneration project in the heart of Lorentzville that has risen from the ashes of a derelict industrial site to become an entrepreneurial incubation centre providing space at cost to social and artistic enterprises from the neighborhood and beyond.

"Safe Study" is an after school enrichment program operating in Bez Valley, Johannesburg South Africa. Through a combination of Arts Enrichment, Academic Support and Mental Wellness, they have created a safe, educational environment for children and young people.
